Hobbits are central characters in J.R.R. Tolkien’s most popular works, The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, and are a key to their success; however they are often overlooked when thinking about his works critically. Tolkien’s craftsmanship is the main reason that we do not discuss the hobbits more often, and I want to focus on a few key aspects of how this operates. First, we will explore what hobbits are like from an in-text perspective, then shift to talking about their roles within the texts and how they help readers accept elements of Tolkien's writing that might otherwise be unbelievable. Along the way, we will see how these concepts interact with some larger themes in Tolkien’s work.
